Chen Guang Biao Visits Singapore.

Smithankyou     3/14/2013 10:36:00 AM     chenguangbiao, Educational, event, omy     No comments
Not too sure how many of you know who Chen Guang Biao is but do spend a bit of time to read this and I'm sure it will inspire you one way or the other.
Multimillionaire Chen Guang Biao giving out canned-air.
I'm gonna write this post in a very narrative manner as I felt that there is no better way to share my experience of meeting him than telling you what I heard.

I got a call from OMY.sg inviting me to meet up with this Multi-Millionaire Chen Guang Biao and to be frank, I've no idea who he was and no surprise, most of my peers do not know him either. Only a handful of seniors heard from him and know who he was.

A short intro by Alvin on his blog about who he is: here.

As some of you might remember that in 2011 I actually joined a service organization that serves the public and needy. So meeting a multimillionaire humanitarian is something close to heart and at the same time a very big deal to me.

The Expectation.

I've met many rich man in my life and I must say it ain't the best thing to do although they always foot the bill at every meal but such people are people of status and they want face. Moreover, Biao Ge (as most people address him which means Elder Brother Biao.) is a person who likes to do things in high key fashion, what if I said something that offend him in anyway? What if what I say ain't what he like to hear? Will that get me into any trouble?

The Meetup.

It started off a little awkward I guess like most of us bloggers has no idea how to start or what to say to the man himself but he was very forthcoming and approachable. The very first gesture that can't me off guard was he had this piece of food(only piece) that his PA(I'm guessing) gave him but he offered it to us instead. Of course, nobody dare to take it off his hands. It might be a very small gesture but I was a little surprised that he did that. I'm not sure how much it means but to me it shows that he always give and it's in his nature and it's not just about being high key and only doing big charity event.

The Lessons.

Him being the bigger man, there are things that we want to learn from him. Learn to be rich(I'm honest and I'm not hiding this.), learn to be a better person, learn to give(this is seriously not easy.) and most importantly - learn to handle the flame/fame. Above all, the biggest lesson that he taught us was to be righteous.  I believe the biggest take away for all those who attended was the sentence that he kept repeating, "好人没好报。" Which I have to agree on many levels.

The very 1st thing that I could relate to when he told us that was actually Hong Kong movie 无间道。

Huh? Us? What did we do?
In the beginning of their 2nd movie, Anthony Wong said this, "殺人放火金腰帶,修橋補路無屍駭." Which simply means those who does evil gets rewarded (monetarily) and those who served the people has no good ending. Isn't that the case in the movie where the police(Tony Leung) die a sad death while the gangster (Andy Lau) survived and has all the fame and glory?

Being a "good person" or a "hero" means sacrifices. You might get your return but not now, not immediate. Maybe after you die, maybe after you stop doing or maybe even never.

The person who speaks the truth in front of everybody, he might be the person who is least welcome in the office, he might be the most hated person but he did increase the productivity of the company. He did well but he is not rewarded. Get it now?

When asked about how to be successful in life, his rule was simple. Set a goal, know where you are heading, keep going and never give up.
Never gonna give you up~ Never gonna let you down~
And when asked about haters,(He did mentioned because of the way he does things and the things he says, he has many many haters.) his reply was very direct and easy - (pardon me for paraphrasing) "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen." It's as simple as that, when you want to speak the truth and when you want to achieve bigger calling, it's all part of the game and you just have to deal with it. One of my favorite phrase in cantonese would be - 吃的咸鱼,抵得渴,which simply means if you like to eat salted fish, be ready to get thirsty.

Why so High Key?

There are many people who donate money or do charity but prefers to be left unnamed. So why so high key Biao Ge? Are you a showoff? To him, charity ain't something shameful and there is nothing to hide and he believes that by sharing his action, it will motivate others, it will encourages other to join the movement. I thought that was pretty great of him!

A Simple Life.

He might be a multimillionaire, he is rich no doubt but his lifestyle is very simple. The family doesn't go for branded and they live their life with a motto of having enough. This is one thing I really need to understand and learn, everything is never enough for me.

Let us Save Some People and Mother Earth.

You could tell that Biao Ge really enjoys helping and giving. Not because of his donation or his act of giving money on the street but is because when he talks about doing charity and giving back, it's not just about money. I've seen many other "humanitarian" that only give away money as a form of charity. Anything else is impossible, no way they are getting their hands dirty. But for this man, he talks about how he always does his charity events with his own hands and not just saving people but also saving the earth. He believe in protecting mother earth, shutting down factories that pollutes the world. I thought that was pretty cool!

I'm Impressed.

As if you couldn't tell from my post above that I'm really impressed. I wouldn't say that he is the best man on earth cause I haven't met them all but it's not a rat race and neither is it a competition. So I will leave it that he is a great man and one that we should learn from. Maybe it's his attitude towards things that make him rich and successful. Why not take a moment and think about it and change your point of views of things in life?

I'll end off with the link to the interview done by OMY and yes, you can watch me trying my best to speak in my lousy 普通话。

I'm lucky I get to meet the man and I hope for you guys who didn't have the chance to, managed to learn something from my account with him. Else, you might like to check out the other bloggers blog for it.

Darren Sim

And here's a picture i kope from his blog.

I dunno why they all look so shy and a bit sian. LOL.

Mr.Smith, let's all be good and do good.

The meaning of "imma".

Smithankyou     2/08/2013 06:52:00 PM     diary, Educational, Humour     No comments
We are now living in the year 2013 (If you are reading this any later, just feel free to add in the extra years.) and every now and then we get some new words which is totally out of our traditional dictionary. And we have this thing call the Urban Dictionary cause those old people just don't accept these words as "real" words.
Let me teach you a new word today!

They might not be regarded as real words but they have their right way of being used too!

Today, I would like to highlight this word:

"IMMA"

According to the leader of urban words: urban dictionary.com :

Used in place of "I am going to..." Technically should be spelled i'mma but since this is a shortened version, we leave out the apostrophe!

Example:
Ricky said, "Imma get myself a power drink and a snack, and I'll be right back."

PLEASE! For the last time, PLEASE DO NOT USE IT IN A SENTENCE THAT SAYS:

"IMMA GOING TO."

"IMMA" IS NOT "I am".

Mr.Smith, Imma going to kill someone for the death of unicorns.

10 Reasons why I read your blog.

Smithankyou     8/16/2012 09:30:00 AM     Blogging, Educational, Humour, informative, random, social media     No comments
jeffbullas.com has always been one of my favorite social media read for the simplest reasons, it's interesting, it's easy to read and most important of all, it makes hell lot of sense.

So recently I stumble upon one of his article on the 10 addictive types of content.

It's sounds pretty straight forward isn't it? But the question is does doing all this things right means you will be popular and influential? The answer is NO. For the simplest reason, cause the content itself still matters and on top of that having high traffic doesn't means you are influential. It could just mean that people stumble upon your blog via goggle more often thanks to your SEO optimization strategy, but are you a good read?

A very simple analogy I gave my friend jus the other day is like acting. Some good acting teachers and directors who can act very well just can't get popular as an actor. It's 99% hardwork and 1% luck and it's that 1% that makes the biggest difference.

Being a blogger as well as a marketeer, I am going to list down the top 10 reasons of why I am reading/visiting/visited your blogs. My opinions here is clearly my own and as usual, if you are a follower of my blog you should know that some of them are inserted humour so do take it with a pitch of salt.

1. I Google certain keywords and you blog returned on page 1.

2. Your blog was RT/Ping on twitter and you have a nice headline.
3. You have nice pictures of your cleavage.
Nice Dress!
4. Your blog posts are so bad I read them to make myself feel better.

Like one of those blogpost that uses blogging templates.

5.My client wants you to endose their product, thus I need to check if you are legit.
6.You blog just got onto The Newpaper.

7.You just cyber argue with Xiaxue.

8. I just met you at an event and you look pretty.
I totally picked this New Yorker up the moment I saw her at Blog Awards.  Ms. Moonberry.
9.Because I am featured on it.(for whatever reason.)

Now I am going to tell Moonberry about her being featured and she will be reading this.

10. Because you ask me to.

And yes, she is reading this because I ask her to. HAHA.

So here are my reasons why I read blogs. What about you?

Mr.Smith, yeah.. I'm shallow. Sue me.

Sesasmith St : Sold Out Vs Sell Out

Smithankyou     10/29/2011 11:23:00 AM     bloggers, Educational, social media     No comments
Hello Boys and Girls ! Welcome to SesaSmith St once  again !

On today's episode, I'm going to teach you two very interesting terms. Although the very first word of these two terms are basically same word in different tenses but their meaning is actually way different. Sold Out Vs Sell Out.

SOLD OUT :

iPhone 3GS
This is SOLD OUT. There could be a few reasons why this is sold out.

1. This is an exclusive product.
2. This product is really awesome and thus everybody wants it.
3. This product is really worth the price.
4. This product has gone through a good marketing segment and found it's positioning and everyone in that subculture loves it and got it.

Generally in Singapore's term we call it "Sorli, No Stock !"

SELL OUT :

Picture from unknown source, texts are edited.
This is SELL OUT. There could be a few reasons why this is SELL OUT.

1. Because he/she is poor and jobless and needs to get freebies.
2. Because he/she needs the attention and trying to be famous.
3. This person is not worth any price and getting freebie is all he could get.
4. He/she totally has no positioning and he does like almost everything and is seen everywhere.
5. He/she has no clue.

Generally in Singapore's term we call it " Giam Peng Giam Sai."

This is actually a classic example of how some celebrities loses their market shares in doing endorsement. Like my marketing lecturer once pointed out about Brad Pitt endorsing both Edwin Jeans and Levi's Jeans. (Although it's different year) This gives consumer a mix feeling cause they will feel that the pair of jeans are the same but are the two brand the same? Are they selling the same brand image? Do they even want to be associated with other brands that Brad Pitt was endorsing? Brand image is very important and so is personnel branding, some of the other products he endorsed includes Honda integra, Jewelry, Coffee, Heineken Beer, Tag Heuer and even Evance Rolex. Does all this brands share the same brand image? No doubt he is a face, he is popular but is that what a real marketer wants and "is there no one else ?"

I just have to do this. Brad Pitt in "Troy"

Same thing for a blogger if you ask me. Should a single blogger be talking about everything under the sun? Every single brand even where it does not tell people about you? Should it be a marketer's job to make sure they endorse the right blogger or should it be a bloggers job to say no to brand that does not speak their personel image?

Words to the marketers : Choose your bloggers wisely if you want your product to be sold out.

Words to bloggers : Choose your products wisely and don't be a sell out and hard sell every single thing. You might think you are helping the product but you are actually doing more harm than help.

Mr.Smith, always sharing but never shared out.

P.S : All characters appearing in this work are fictitious. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

Reply to : Toxoplasmosis and Cats

Smithankyou     2/23/2011 12:34:00 AM     cats, Educational, illness, myth     No comments
From : Verywell.com

Once upon a time, doctors used to routinely advise pregnant women to avoid cats -- leading many women to give up their cats or to worry over even the tiniest cat scratch during pregnancy. But do cats really increase risk of miscarriage?

Toxoplasmosis

Smithankyou     2/22/2011 11:49:00 PM     Educational, illness     No comments
Toxoplasmosis is a fairly uncommon disease that affects all type of mammals and birds. When it does occur, it is a serious disease. Toxoplasmosis is caused by a single-celled protozoan parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. Although disease caused by Toxoplasma is uncommon, many animals have immunity to the disease that they acquired during a prior exposure.

Home is ...

Smithankyou     2/21/2011 10:00:00 AM     Educational, home, mtv, MusicMonday, singapore, Thoughts, Video     1 comment
Thanks to Dick (Lee) and Kit Chan, we have this amazing song which we listen year after year during the NDP.  And this year, we actually have a new version where we have 20 odd Singaporean singers standing up for Singapore and coming together as one united people and bring us the song "home".

I am sure we've all catch this on tv but it's still a good share. Either way check out thisiscom.sg for the full 6 mins version. Although this video looks very much like one of my favorite song "手牵手“ I must say that it is still a very good work. I like yanzi's voice, joi's as well and I think the remaster was awesome especially with Shiek's rap.

The video - it's for sars anyway. FYI.

Anyway it's not the first of it's kind. Remember 明天会更好 ?  No?  请看VCR !

Yup, that's almost 25 yrs ago for you. If you notice, the first line is actually by the same singer - 蔡琴 .

Anyway, the song or MV aside, I notice that the artist in the "home" video was ask to write and draw something. From their response I am guessing the question is "what is home" ?

So home is...

A place you know you belong?

A place you want to be at the end of the day?

A place your rest?

I do not know about you people out there cause I mean I read a lot of unhappy tweets about our gahment day in day out but I felt that I am still very proud to be a Singaporean. I know we have some policies here and there which might not sounds like something as a person of a nation you might like directly but if you ask me as a bigger picture I felt that we are doing quite good. A nation less than a 100 years and we are top of many? I am not trying to be pro gahment here but I am saying that looking on the bright side there are a lot of things which I like about being here at "home" . My passport can bring me around the world without problems, we can hold can and celebrate Valentine's day, if you go around PDA-ing you will not be caught by police (the very most by stomper), we do not have nude beaches but at least we have Sentosa and bikini babes, we have expensive cars and ERP but at least your car will still be there and not stolen, we might not have too many a choice of places to visit but we can visit any where we want at any time without the worry of being mug or rape or kidnapped and best of all I am typing on this blog in English thanks to our education. I can't imagine speaking Malay everywhere I go and see Malay sign boards.

I might not like Singapore's weather, not the conservative nature of the "auntie and uncles", no nude beaches (did I mention that already?), lack of NBA coverage, no local porn magazine and TV channel and too much ERP but I think there are too much I owe the nation for who I am today.

Well, fine, before this sounds like an advertorial or NDP post I should just end with my answer.

Home:  A place where I am proud to say where I am from and where I will be.

What's home to you?

How to dissolve a debate ?

Smithankyou     2/17/2011 01:24:00 AM     Educational, lesson, selfhelp, Thoughts     No comments
What makes people different? Different in physical? Different in mentality? Different in opinion?

Like a very popular online quote says " Opinion is like ass, everyone has one" Especially for me, I have a big ass and in fact yes, I have my own opinion and more often I have a very different tolerance as well as point of view for many things. So how does that put me in a society like mine where yes man are much appreciated and conformity like social ethic ? Frankly I have no idea where it puts me on my scale as a friend or a co-worker.

9 Mistakes I committed on Twitter and could’ve avoided !

Smithankyou     10/27/2009 11:23:00 AM     Educational, social media, twitter     No comments
Erm, nope.. not me.. but i got this article off

http://www.dailyseoblog.com and i thought it is interesting to share.

Author : Mani Karthik

9 Mistakes I committed on Twitter and could’ve avoided !

Let me share a little secret with you. You know, whenever things are going perfectly alright, I tend to get nervous. Very nervous, because I know things are going too fine and they are too good to be true. Just can’t be that way right ? I mean, we all make mistakes, in fact should make mistakes. If there aren’t any mistakes you can find, then its because you are either non-human or you’re hiding them.

Failures are the stepping stones to success right ? I strongly believe this. I believe in making mistakes and in fact, encourage my trainees to make lot of them. They are opportunities to me, every single mistake is. While explaining things to someone, if he doesn’t ask any question back, and get it all right in the first go, I tend to get jittery. Its a clear signal to me that he isn’t understanding anything.

So when I think of my first days on Twitter, am glad I made those mistakes. Because had I not fooled around and made those mistakes I would have made them today and they would’ve proved costly to me. So, let me share with you some of the most “memorable”, mistakes I made on Twitter. I hope they will also help you make judgements about what is good for you.

1. Trying to “bait” popular tweeps to reply to me

Man, that’s one of the biggest mistakes I ever did on Twitter. Agreed that twitter lets you reply to anyone and they are “supposed to” reply back to us. But that doesn’t mean that you can poke anyone and possibly get them reply to you. I still don’t know the rules for getting to befriend a popular guy on Twitter, the only thing I know is that being genuine helps a lot.

2. Not using a background profile image.

I have a nice background now, but during the early days I thought that the black grunge bg was like “awesome”. Clearly, I didn’t check many other profiles and was confined to my “friends circle” if I can call it. If only I saw those beautiful twitter backgrounds earlier :)

Today the twitter background is a great resource to tell more about you and your brand. If you aren’t using it properly, I’m of the opinion that you aren’t using your Twitter profile to its fullest potential.

3. Not using an avatar and writing a clear, descriptive bio.

This is not a mistake, actually I didn’t know about it. I was so focused on the blog that I thought I needn’t write anything there worth mentioning. Today most people know me from the twitter profile, so you know how important it is to have a nice bio and avatar.

4. Not engaging in conversations.

Don’t get me wrong here. When I mean conversations, I mean mutually worthwhile and productive conversations. I still am not a fan of “Thank you” and “Good night” messages on Twitter. I personally think that they are a major turn offs for your majority of followers. But I’m a great fan of group discussions and productive talk. This normally happens around events (through hashtags) and meetups. They are fun because even though they are conversational pieces, other tweeps can also join in, they aren’t dialogues. And one major mistake I did earlier was not to engage in conversations, rather stick to one way messages. Lesson learned.

5. Writing negative/tasteless comments about myself that no one would ever want to read.

Its probably because I didn’t have too many followers that time and was a self cantered low life that whenever Twitter asked me the question “what are you doing” I said things like “Boring life”.. “Doing project reports” ..”Stupid weather” etc. They aren’t bad like not offensive or anything but still, what’s the point in writing them right ? I could’ve written them in my diary. But for the world to see ? #fail !!

5. Promoting my own site throwing up links.

Obviously I thought someone would click it and give me some hits. But I wouldn’t have done it if tweetdeck didn’t have the URL column. So not entirely my fault !

6. Seeing it as a secondary communication tool.

I was wrong. In my opinion Twitter is the best primary communication tool available today. Your blog and everything else takes the back seat. Earlier, I saw Twitter as a tool to “push thoughts and ideas”. Only later did I realize that its a communication channel that attracts ideas and thoughts, not the other way round.

7. Not sharing interesting stories with others.

I was pretty much active on social media like SU and Digg, but never saw Twitter as a tool to share interesting stories and links with others

8. Follow very less people and limit myself to my thoughts.

Biggest mistake. I was such a fool not to realize the power of Twitter. You know, most of the times we are inhibited by our thoughts that we don’t open up to opportunities. And I did exactly that. I limited myself to following a few hundred people and thought – this is it. but it wasn’t. Only when I opened up and started to follow more people did I realize that this thing is enormous. I had all the few hundred I initially followed in my IM anyway ;)

9. Responding to automatic DMs.

Honestly, I thought those “thanks for following me” DM’s were genuine and replied to almost all of them. Now that you know, don’t laugh at me. :)

As for myself, I simply hate people who RT everything people says, I say RT i am not saying replying to @, I must admit i chat too much using twitter which floods people's time line.

And I do not enjoy seeing tweeps who join funny website which keep spamming things like join this contest join that contest.

Mr.Smith, Happy Twitting kay ?

My 1st PCC Experience - With the help of Internet

Smithankyou     10/05/2009 02:29:00 PM     debbie, donald, Educational, GPGT, shooturtweeple, Thoughts, twitter, xianrong     1 comment
My 1st Experience with PCC

Friends, traditionally you make friend through places like schools, work place or because of where you spent most of your time at. I must say that these methods of making friends are still what most people do but I must also point out that they might not give the best result but on the contrary. When was the last time you actually chat with your neighbor? Hang out with your secondary school friends? Of course I am not talking about never but we can’t deny that it’s getting lesser and lesser.

The world has evolve in too many ways, we start to accept things which are so out of the world, people flying, man landing on moon, woman in love with woman, man giving birth and every now and then people are asking others, what is the 8th wonder of the world? If you ask me, I am telling you the 8th wonder is the “Internet”

Internet gives us information, knowledge, shrink our world and blah blah blah and many more and today I am going share with you an evolution of another phenomenon itself on the internet – Social Networking.

I do not know when it started for the world, I do not know how it started for you guys but I very clearly remember how it started for me, 1998 – my very own Compaq desktop which allows me to the internet and my 1st social network tool – Hotmail. I start to keep in contact with people I ALREADY know via Email and soon enough I was introduce to mIRc, I start to talk to people whom I do not know, I will not know and I might even remember. During the mIRc times, we were always trying to “hide” our identity, change a nick, change an e-mail, everyone have the “I have a real life” and “I have an internet life” mentality, it doesn’t mix into one. And people will have the “ what? U know girls online? U mean u can’t get chick in real life? “ – What a loser ! And soon enough we were introduce to another tool to keep in touch with all these unknown friends – ICQ and the evolution goes on to MSN, Yahoo Chat, Online Forums and many more.

Today, internet affair is never the same, people blog, people are self centered(like me), we talk about ourselves, we make facebook accounts of ourselves, comparing to the “I have 2 life” concept people are taking it as 1 life, in fact people wants to be famous online more than they want to in real life ! Isn’t that amazing I ask you? And so the ball game has evolves to “ What? U meet this chick on facebook and u are meeting her tonite? Dude u are the man !” Get what I mean?

What I am trying to say here is we make REAL friends from this “UNREAL” space of ours, now can you guys please agree with me that the internet IS the 8th wonder in the world now? (in fact the thought of it is that internet is pretty out of the world)

What sparks me with the little writing above is simply because of my personal evolution, it’s not like I never met up with internet friends over some forum back then,( in fact I did make lots of good friends online, to name a few like BR and darkmaul who I always hangout with)but the thing I am talking about now is the Twitter Outing.

That’s a virgin happening for me thanks to @donaldsng and @seraphina22 ( have no idea why I put the @ sign in front? Go check twitter out dude). And we went for the event call #shooturtweeple ( have no idea why I put the # sign? Common.. twitter.com pls)

Basically #shooturtweeple is PCC in the context of @donaldsng, Play Camera Club. And yesterday we had a hell of a time with PCC. Enough of talking and let’s see our “cum”

And the fact is, I really shoot rubbish lah ! Literally !

LIM !

Like I mention, online social network is not for geek, these people are quite some party animals too! Sorry, busying drink not much pics !

Summing it up

What can I say? I enjoyed myself, I am loving this, I am happy I met lots of new people, I would like to go for more of these kinda PCC thingy!!
