MMI SAVOUR GOURMET FESTIVAL 2018 AT SHENZHEN

Smithankyou     6/23/2018 12:00:00 PM     china, Food, MMI savour gourmet festival, travel     No comments
We all came back with extra baggage... In our tummy.

Like my Bro Barney Stinson says it the best - SUIT UP AND GET READY TO PARTEHHH!!! IT IS GOING TO BE LEGEN.... WAIT FOR IT....But he probably wouldn't agree with my hover hand picture.

Before I go on to talk about my trip I have to talk about the food I had at MMI Savour gourment festival 2018.

It's really amazing I get to try all these Michelin-starred dishes all at one place while watching live performances under the stars. It would really be an amazing event to bring a date but all I've with me was Nic and Flora. #MEH

It's a typical question to ask at such events right? WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE?

I'm a sweet tooth and the Red Dragon Paviova by Australian Dessert Chef Samuel Yeo takes the cake. Did you see what I did there? Fine, it's not exactly cake but it's still a food attempt on good pun. (Oops I did it again.)

Dessert aside, the most innovative food at the event has to be the Xiao Long Bao by ‘Demon Chef’’ Alvin Leung from Michelin 3-star restaurant Bo Innovation. I've no idea how to describe it accurately but the whole XLB just burst into a mouthful of happiness the moment you put it in your mouth. It's really unlike anything I've ever tried. It taste really good and the texture and experience is soooo different. OMG, I'm typing this and feeling really hungry now!

I mean since we were there on official business representing Unscrambled.sg so it's no secret that we already have a post there with all the information. So please head there to find out more so I do not need to reproduce the content here. LOL. PLEASE CLICK. LOVE YOU LONG TIME AND THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

So now I've gotten the food out of the way, let me tell you the story of how it went down. #Foodforlyfe #Foodbeforeeverything

Red Dragon Paviova by Australian Dessert Chef Samuel Yeo and not my hand.

It was an exciting week for the Project 24 team last week. Not only because we closed a few other new projects last week but also because our bags were all packed and ready to go! SHENZHEN BABY!

It's not the first time I visited the land of dragons but there were many firsts for me during this trip.

First time in Shenzhen

As compared to Beijing, Da lian, and a few other cities I've visited before, I would say that visiting every part of China always gives me different experiences. I've no idea what to expect at Shen Zhen since it has been years since I last stepped into China.

What can I say? I was pretty impressed with the airport.

First time having multiple dishes from multiple Michelin-starred chef.

Not just 1 Michelin-starred chef but 6 of them! How is that possible? Only at Savour MMI gourmet festival! And that was the reason why we headed down to Shenzhen. To fill our belly with good food, all in one place. And if you haven't figure out at this point of the article, this is what the event is about. Bringing good food from around the world into one event!

On another episode of my job is cooler than yours - "Backstage passes".

It's not an everyday affair that you get to see all the behind the scene of movies or events firsthand and this felt especially interesting to me – a person who is always into "how stuff works". For those of you guys who have been stalking this space long enough would remember that I used to run an events company, so being at the event site felt especially interesting to me. It's like the ghost of my career past.

Seriously ah. Walking through a site with booths being set up, part timers being briefed on what to do, events manager doing a rundown on tomorrow's activities and etc got my adrenaline pumping. For a moment I was like, "CAN I BE PART OF THIS PLEASE!" Events planning and execution is tiring stuff but it still is one of my favourite jobs so far.

Before I get all sappy and get into Lang Leav mode, I better quickly finish this post with the rest of the updates. LOL. Not too sure how you guys will respond to my talent of the lack of poems.

And some 24hours later. I would like to quote lil Seth - TAR DAR!

Mic check, sound check, chefs in position and WE ARE READY TO ROLL!

So yes! We had a good time at MMI Savour gourment festival 2018! I would advice you to scroll up again to look at those amazing food we had!

So good that this boy has no words but to show his appreciation his way.

Anyway, if you are not going to make it in time for this round, a little bird told me that there are going to be another installment of MMI Savour Gourmet Festival later this year in another exciting city and a few more to come in coming years. I really hope you guys get to try all these good because a good friend don't get fat alone wants his friend to try everything good too!

... DARY!!! LEGENDARY!

14 Thoughts That Went Through My Mind While Eating 100 Chicken McNuggets

Smithankyou     6/29/2017 11:46:00 AM     Challenge Accepted, chicken nuggets, Food, mcdonald's     4 comments
It was a public holiday and instead of taking a break at home, my colleague and I decided to hit the office and get some work done. We were in the office since noon and weren't really hungry until 11pm. Which makes it pretty much 12 hours of fasting for us.

We needed some food and because it was Hari Raya, none of the Indian Muslim mamak stalls that we usually visit were open. The next best thing we have nearby was McDonald's.

Instead of being normal and ordering two extra-value meals, we decided to order 100 McNuggets.

Why?

Simply because we can. (Spoiler alert – Or so we thought.)

1. 0 min - This is fun. Just look at the cashier's reaction

2. 20 min (that's how long they took to cook 100 pieces of nuggets) - Huh? That's all? I was expecting more

3. 21 min - This should be easy. Should have ordered 200.

4. 22 min - I totally need to go on Instagram Live for this. Or would Facebook Live be better? WhatsApp story? Snapchat? I need to tell the whole world!

5. 24 min - This is so fun. I'm totally enjoying everyone's reaction.

6. 34 min - What? It has only been 10 nuggets? I'm sure I ate more. Do you think they gave us too many?

7.  45 min – I think the nuggets are a little dry. Let me get some water...

8. 55min - It has been 30 min? We spent 30min on nuggets?! AND WE'RE STILL NOT DONE!?

9. 60 min - Why is the mountain of nuggets NEVER ENDING?

10. 63 min - Is it me or am I not feeling my jaw anymore?

11. 70 min - COME ON!!! WE CAN DO THIS!!

.... Or can we?

12. 75 min - How are you feeling? I don't think I can do this anymore...

13. 76 min - No...No...No...Okay. I'm sure I can still squeeze in a few more.

14. 80 min - OMG WE ARE SUCH FAILURES. SORRY MOMMY, SORRY DADDY, SORRY SON. Daddy has disappointed you.

So it wasn't as easy as we thought. We only managed to finish 65 of them.

(Don't worry, we didn't waste food. We brought the remaining pieces home for breakfast... lunch... dinner and supper.)

The day after...

I'm not sure what we started but...

Okay, you are welcome, McDonald's.

Fun times aside, I have to warn you guys, it's not funny eating SO much. Yongwei had toilet runs throughout the night and my appetite was badly affected for 2 days. I had so much poop throughout the whole day as well - I never knew I could have such active bowel movements?

I know nuggets are one of the best things in life (maybe not so now...) but remember, life is always about moderation.

Salted gula melaka and durian ice cream lost and found!

Smithankyou     6/01/2016 12:13:00 PM     Food, ice cream, swensen's     No comments

Contrary to popular belief that Smith doesn't eat ever since his weight lost of 16kg, I am actually eating a lot more "unhealthy food". I do not eat your typical fried rice or chap chai png but I actually spent a lot of my pay and time on cafe hopping and ice cream hunting. (both for the camera as well as my belly of course.)

Which also means, our asian food choice of rice and noodles is actually the real reason why we are fat. Okay fine, why I am fat. Better not offend online netizen these days. Later tio fathership stomp for bringing out 1 little of fresh fruit juice. (Actually no lah, I'm not even famous enough to get such campaign. Fine, actually I did a campaign for peel fresh before. LOL.)

So after visiting ice cream cafes after ice cream cafes, I actually found one of the best salted gula melaka and durian ice cream at one of the most mainstream places. It is so mainstream that I haven't stepped into it for the longest time. So long that I didn't even remember they have these two favorite local flavours!!!

Correct. It is your friendly neighbourhood SWENSEN'S'!!!

And you know what's the best thing? Happy Hours on weekday from 2.30pm to 5pm, it is 1 for 1. Which means you get a pretty sundae like this at only around $6 EACH! And for almost the same price, this is all you can get at a hispter cafe.

Okay lah, to be fair hipster cafes' ice cream price ranges from $3 - $5ish and also Swensen's price I am talking about is only referring to happy hours. BUT STILL! It is damn tasty! So stop only going to hipster cafes and neglect our good old established mainstream restaurants!!!

Where: Swensen's
Where exactly: Almost everywhere lah!

A Cheese Tart better than BAKE

Smithankyou     5/25/2016 12:01:00 PM     bake, bkk, cheese tart singapore, Food, Food Review     No comments

Few weeks ago when I was at BKK for work, I managed to steal some time out to grab a BAKE cheese tart. It was the same week when it came to Singapore with a reputation of being Hokkaido's best cheese tart. As a result, Singaporeans once again rushed down to the mall and queue like they have never queued before.

Oh, there was no queue at BKK. Not at all. I walked in and out with my tart within 3 mins. In fact, I finished my tart within the same 3 mins as well. Not too sure if tart was small or mouth is too big.

Fast forward to 3 weeks later, and guess what? The queue is still as disgustingly long. At least 2hrs wait to get your hands onto this cheese tart. I am pretty sure queuing for things is a national hobby.

With the arrival of Hokkaido's best cheese tart, (which I found it so-so) many local bakery has also started selling their own cheese tarts. Remember the whole Bubble Tea nonsense? I guess it is the same thing all over again (just that I'm no longer 16 years old). But I would give more credit to cheese tart over bubble tea. There's really not much skill when it comes to making a cup of bubble tea. (I think. Just pour in only right.)

So the other day while I was walking down the road, thinking about life and suddenly got hungry, I stepped into one of the most mainstream restaurant and saw this normal looking cheese tart waving at me. I swear it was waving at me. Not like I was that hungry and started having hallucination.

I saw it there...

Then I bought it...

Then I ate it...

Then I.. WAHHHHH..  MOTHER OF GAWDDDD

You saw it right! It's from Hanis. If you have no idea, Hanis is the halal version of Hans. I've no idea if it is available island wide but I found it at the Wikie edge branch. It is going at $3 for a pop and currently it is having a promotion of buy 5 get 1 FREE!!

Guess who bought 5 after that. :D

And no, no code for you to quote and get discount. Smith also paid for them at full price lor. But I swear it's worth the money!!!

What do you want to eat?

Smithankyou     4/12/2016 08:00:00 AM     diary, Food     4 comments
Spending more time away from internet and getting some Vitamin D!
I haven't been spending much time on Social Media Platforms "properly" these days. When I say properly I mean like really reading what my friends are up to or engaging in any form of conversation or debate on anyone's feed.

I am not too sure is it because the fact that work is piling up on the table or my interest and consumption of information off the internet has changed once again (It has nothing to do with having a son okay. Don't everything also blame fatherhood.). If your memory serves you well enough, you will remember Smith as the person who will jump into any form of online debate or even just dropping a comment on your pictures to troll you, simply because he can.

These days I am so lazy to engage in any form of debates, so much as that I do not even want to blog about anything that can cause a debate. (Yeah, talking about anything controversy can be an easy way to milk clicks and get the masses' attention but no thanks.)

It is very tiring just to bring my point across, these days especially. I feel that Facebook/Social Media generally has become very negative. People just jump onto you the very moment they see something that doesn't sit well with them instead of trying to think of the possibilities of the other party might probably be right. Because of this, most of the time I just post or share anything I like (which is safe) and I just leave it as it is. I know, I am very self centered that way I guess.

That being said, I actually saw a pretty funny quote the other day.

"Relationships are just two people constantly asking each other where they want to go eat, until one of them dies."

The Struggle is real. At least for me. Although I've been a fat boy most of my life, I am really not one of those foodie who will research on the best laksa, best hipster eggs, or even top 10 whatever nonsense food to eat. I've no idea what to eat and restaurant week for me was a big step forward of knowing where to go. Okay lah, to be honest it wasn't really my idea. It was also my colleague's idea. When you don't have great ideas, you better have great friend I guess.

Things got even worst after my weight loss and my new diet.  I can survive on almost nothing. Although I do not have a flat tummy on the outside, I swear the inside of my tummy is of a 17 yrs old teenager. I hardly eat and I am almost always full.

So these days the conversation about food goes down almost always like this:

Me: "What do you want to eat?"

Wife: "Anything"

Me: "I'm not hungry."

Wife: "But I need to eat"

Me: "Why not you decide then?"

Wife: "Anything lor."

Me: "Erm, why not we go find a nice place with nice food that I can take picture of?"

Wife: "Okay lor."

*Goes into google frenzy mode to find nice food for the wife and my camera.

Despite having like 10,000 food blogs on the internet. I find the decision of picking what to eat very tough. Not sure which blogger to believe, not too sure if we can get decent parking, not too sure if the food is nice, not too sure if we could get seats or sometimes we are simply too lazy to even put on pants to walk out of the house.

In fact the reason I am actually visiting cafes or restaurants these days is really more for photo-taking or simply for work. Yeah, I am working on a new product for the company which involves food. I know I am not the biggest foodie around but comon, I have colleagues with better taste bud. HAHA.

This is seriously the BEST Mee Rebus EVER! Yunos n Family @ 724 Ang Mo Kio

So if you are interested to know, here are some of the recent places we have visited and would recommend that you check them out.

- Boufe (Hipster Brunch, good for photo taking)

- Sunday Folks (Soft served Ice cream with a chio chio neighbourhood)

- Wildfire (The BURGERS!!! And I love it being located at Orchard. It means more shopping there after. Forever 21, Uniqlo, HnM, Cotton On. All my favourite place to shop.)

- Milk Cow (Not exactly food places but I love their milk ice cream. Like it is MILK not Vanilla.)

- Element Amara Singapore (The Alaska Crab from the buffet is LOVE)

- Keisuke (Ramen!! And they give you free flow EGGS!!! #CheapoNaNa)

- PS Cafe Petite (Truffle Fries and those cakes and dessert! And the most hipster neighbourhood ever)

- My most trusted Delicious Boneless Chicken Rice @ Katong Shopping Centre (But this place is the eat and fuck off place.)

And yes, I was saying about my tiny appetite so I've been there but I did not have everything off their menu lah!

DIBS AT 51 Duxton Rd, 089515

Smithankyou     1/11/2016 10:51:00 AM     DIBS, Duxton, Food, Food Review, sponsored post     No comments
I must be glad that I did most of my dating in the early 2000s. I really ain't one of those guys who knows where to bring ladies for a good date. Romantic gesture from me, yes, but nice dining place probably ain't my forte. I am so mainstream when it comes to food that we will probably end up at hooters for western, loy kee chicken rice chinese, and sushi tei for japanese food. Maybe even mcdonalds' for my favourite double cheese burger.

I'm not saying those ain't decent food but with the blooming culture of hipsters cafe and indie restaurant, i am probably your worst date if you are judging me based on where we are having our meals. #CouldHaveBeenForeverAlone

If you have the same problem as me, don't worry as I have something to save your life. If you are looking at impressing some guests from overseas or some chicks during a date, or even just a place that you can visiting regularly - DIBS is the place.

LOVE THE RED MONSTER OUTSIDE DIBS!

DIBS has been at duxton for slightly more than 2 years but they recently had a change of management and revamped their menu!

One of the things that really caught my attention was their food menu. Their food menu are written on small cards instead of the typical booklet or A4 size paper. Why? because they actually update and change their menu as often as every 1 - 2 months. To make things even more fun, they also offer a "?" card where you let the chef decides for you what to eat! Very good for ladies who can't make up their mind on dates. You can now look adventurous instead of indecisive, haha.

Parmesan Sticks. Truffle Egg white foam and Confit Egg Yolk
Tasting portion of "Fresh Catch" - F.O.D with Nori CousCous Horseradish pea puree and Miso Glaze
TomYam Pumpkin Risotto

The team at DIBS gives me a feeling that they ain't in the business just because it is a business but rather because they really love their food. Each and everyone of their staffs are able to explain their food and share some insights to you. The service is really very good as you can feel that each and everyone of them do it with their heart! And just based on the menu and food we are getting, you could tell that they enjoy cooking and get creative with the dishes. TomYam Risotto? That must be the 1st right! (Okay lah, at least to me lor)

Special for the day - Tasting portion of Atas looking Bak Kut Teh! Yes, this tasted like Bak Kut Teh!
This must be one of my favourite? It is so pretty and very tasty at the same time. The Chinese in me was telling the chef that I want to order a bowl of white rice? This is actually savoury and will taste really good with a bowl of rice! There goes my carbo count. LOL.

I really love their food selection. Besides the fact that is it rather creative and also that it ain't like deep fried stuff or very heavy stuff. It is the kind of food that you date will not complain about feeling fat after eating!! Totally suitable to bring your date there where both of you can erm, act demure and still have a good time instead of just munching on greens and pretending that you like it.

Is it very rude to say "fucking hell" was my highlight at DIBS when they have all the nice food?
Fuck it, I love my fucking hell!

Mac&Cheese. I did not tag this picture wrongly. It is Macarons and Dragonfruit Cheesecake! Creative right!
They also have a very good selection of desserts which includes one of our hipsters favourite - Churros. Actually the MUST try dessert is the Chocolate Shell!! It was so good that erm.. I didn't take a picture of it. :p #Fail

So now you have heard about this place from me. I hope you can bring a date there to impress her. And if you do not have a date to bring, you can bring me. I do not mind going again really! (In fact I already went back after the food tasting session with a friend. Not a date lah, she is just a friend who came back to Singapore for holiday as she is currently working in HK. And she loved it too! See, #TestedProven)
