Mr.Smith #CookForFamily

Smithankyou     8/06/2012 02:26:00 PM     #CookForFamily, Cooking, Family., Food     2 comments
I am born and raised by a work from home mother and that means lots and lots of awesome home cooked food by my mother. This is one of the thing that I told myself that I will try to do for my family in the future but I haven't been doing it that often. In fact due to my job's nature, I haven't even been eating a lot at home.

Thanks to @DanielFoodDiary , he reminded us the importance of "saying thanks" and showing appreciation to the one who cooked for us all our life at home. Introducing #CookForFamily~
From Daniel's blog:

The #CookForFamily Initiative
The #CookForFamily is a Singapore food bloggers initiative – there is no competition, sponsors, or hidden agenda involved. It is created with a simple objective of getting more bloggers, and hopefully their fans and followers, to start cooking and bonding with their families.
The bloggers have picked a day in July to cook a meal for their family or loved ones, and will blog, tweet and instagram about their cooking, experience and thoughts all on the same day – 6th August 2012 (Monday), with the hashtag #CookForFamily.
So with this initiative, I was reminded how much I enjoy cooking and how much I love my family. Although we are no restaurant chef and neither am I a major foodie like Jacob, Shi Ting or even Mel but I think the food my mum taught me to cook is really awesome too!
Can you guys what I'm going to cook?
What I am going to cook is 3 very simple home made dish. Although I am a true blue Asian, the cats are just there to entertain you just in case this post ain't interesting. And we didn't eat my cats.

Dish 1 : Dark Sauce Chicken

Doesn't look good? But it taste damn good!
There are a few good reasons why this is one of my favorite dish

1. Easy to cook
2. Cheap
3. Short preparation time
4. Easy to go with rice.

What we need

1. Dark Sauce
2. Light Sauce
3. Rock Sugar
4. Ginger Slices
5. Garlic
6. Chicken
7. Water

Dish 2: 3 Happiness Egg. (At least that's what my mum calls it.)

Another very easy to cook dish. And it's very clean too!

What we need

1. Eggs
2. Salted Egg
3. Century Egg

Dish 3: Fried Kai Lan with Dang Gui (Angelica Root)

This is actually an experimental dish. I have never tried this flavor of Kai Lan. The first time I tried this was at "The soup restaurant" and I really like the taste of the Dang Gui and my mum suggested that we should tried it at home.

We first boiled the dang gui to get it's essence out. Fried garlic and then the Kai Lan. We only added the dang gui and it's essence later. It turned out okay but I thought the taste ain't as rich. Maybe we need more dang gui? Or anyone with any suggestions?

 What we need

1. Kai Lan
2. Dang Gui
3. Garlic

And being chinese, we have to complete the meal with: RICE!

Healthier choice! We have been eating brown rice ever since my dad's health was never at it's best.

Here's my simple home cooked meal for #CookForFamily!

Here's the family looking very happy. My mum was very happy and she kept repeating that this is a very heart warming meal. She also mentioned that she is very happy that out of her 3 kids she has 1 who is me who is always interested in learning cooking from her. The sister was very happy with the meal too as she haven't been having great food in weeks.

I am sure this is the motivation for many mothers or fathers who cooks for their family. The smile on their family's face, the thanks and of course the empty plates!
I really enjoyed myself and it's a shame I haven't been doing it often enough. Let's be reminded that it really takes a lot for our parents to put these food on our tables everyday. Love them and let them know!

Mr.Smith, have you cooked for your family yet?
