When I grow up, I wanna be a taxi driver.

I know I am a few days late but that gave me a little more time to read a little more no? I know it's just an excuse but oh well, I can't turn back time like I can't go back to the days when I could use the line "When I grow up."
From The Real Singapore fb page.
Remember how we like to use this line or how your lazy teacher who can't think of a better compo title will just ask you about what do you wanna do when you grow up. The choice are always very limited for us kids(back then at least) isn't it? It's pretty much the case of things like police men, fire men, teacher or maybe even a scientist or an astronaut. It basically is what the media perceives to be a good and interesting job isn't it. As a kid you have no idea what a marketing person is or how much money you will earn as a banker, to a kid all these people are just adults in suit driving nice car and holding papers and files.

And guess what? The latest coolest job in town now is to be a blogger! Thanks to Xiaxue! Taxi driver thanks to our Straits Times! Here's the article.

No disrespect to Taxi drivers, my dad was a Taxi driver before his kidney started failing and I love taxi drivers. If not for them I will be so stuck. In fact I might have contributed to Mr. Muhammad Hasnor Hashim's $7,000 income. Yup, now that is the punchline. He mentioned that his monthly salary is $7,000.

I don't think it's impossible but I don't think it's quite true either. The last I remember my dad could hardly pocket enough everyday. There are days that he came home with close to nothing. I also found an very interesting article that did a crack in the calculation:

"If that cabby - Mr. M. H. Hashim, 32, drives for only 8 hours and take home $200 per day after paying his $50 fuel and $100 rental, it means that he collects $43.75 per hour or $0.73 per minute. At that rate, he is occupied on the road with a paying passenger every minute of the 8 hours, with no waiting at taxi stands, airports or anywhere. Is that possible?. I'm sure you have seen long taxi queue at shopping malls, airports and empty taxis cruising around with no passengers. But Mr. M.H. Hashim is occupied in all the 8 hours with a paying passengers! How preposterous and incredible! " Full Article.

And of course, yahoo news did an article on this which is quite an interesting read too.

The best has yet to come, or rather the worst. Someone did this and it was circulating around on facebook.

I mean I personally find it a bit crazy for a taxi driver to be earning THAT much and if in a case that it is not the full truth as mentioned by all the other blogs/articles, it is still a little too much to be disclosing all this personal information.

It might be the journalist that has exaggerated the story or spicing things up but I still think it's a little crazy for people to go in depth and stir so much issues.  How will it affect anyone for a silly article like this? Of course, you might say that it is because of people like me with such attitude that allows journalist to write irresponsibly but in my defense it is also because of people like these that Singaporeans don't dare to open their mouth where the truth is out there. The fear of being scrutinize. The magic sentence is " Mai Tio Stomp hor"
Singaporeans

Bottom line of this incident is that as a journalist or blogger, it is always important to write responsibly. Don't just write for the sake of readership sake, it might get people into trouble and it will still not make you famous. As for others who are really keen on being published, think twice, fame is just not worth it.

It's really about the money! Another one from SGAG!

Singapore only
Morning drive Taxi, at night wash plate, 1 month $10,000 pay!

Mr.Smith,  It's all about the money, money~

One man made this all happen. He made it go viral with their phantom mirror program. He dug deep into the financial history of the taxi driver. He organized sites to stage this information. One man who has a strange liking for birds.

That is the truth Mr Smith.
