1. Diner en Blanc (from moonberry.com) - Diner en Blanc marks the worldʼs first viral event, originated some 24 years ago, a très chic picnic imported from Paris and now taking hold in outdoor public spaces in 20 cities across 5 continents in 2012, from Barcelona to New York City, from Montreal to Sydney. No other pop-up event launched anywhere has managed to create interest worldwide by reaching out to culinary enthusiasts anxious to recreate the concept in their city and assemble them into one network. Come 30 August 2012, the capital of Asia – Singapore, makes history by being the first Asian city to host Diner en Blanc!
2. My friend @DanielFoodDairy blogs about Diner en Blanc -
3. Some bloggers were invited to the event as well.
4. In his(Daniel's) blog, he blogs about what type of local food he would like to bring including Tau Huay.
5. He was told to remove the post cause the food(Tau Huay) he mentioned ain't high class enough for this event.
6.The event decided to uninvite all bloggers and insult bloggers and Social Media. I quote moonberry's blog "organizers feel that there is little value in inviting bloggers because they do not regard social media influencers to be that influential "
7. Moonberry blogs about it.
8. I read about it, he read about it, she read about it, Mr.Brown too read about it.
9. I created this in a rush. 4mins and 12 secs to be exact. And I realize the fonts were abit out of place.
10.And the rest were history.
11.And a very sad Daniel blogs about it.
How I See it.
Nobody ask but here is why I am unhappy.
1. As a marketing/events person, one does not simply belittle the importance of Social Media.Even if you are a 24years old event, even if you are damn awesome but do you know even our leading party in politics in Singapore are very wary of Social Media?
3.You do not come into our land and insult our food. FYI, you guys like to eat escargot.
4.I do understand that it's your event and it's your rules but ever heard of cross culture management? Even as a big company, Macdonalds' does not sell pork burger in countries with our Muslim friends such as Malaysia and Singapore. Like my mum always says "进屋叫人,进庙拜神" It translate, go into house, address others, go into temple, pray to the god. It's really you house, your game.
Of course everybody else has something to say about this on twitter and not all of them made sense but I guess I have to give it to Mr.Brown and Tommy Wee.
And because of this, many events were spawned.
1.The girl who was behind Dance For Japan some time back started Super White. Which is a pun for a local vulgarity.
3.And even Mr Brown has an idea for event!
See! Are you sure our social media ain't good? Do we really not matter? (Although I wished this guys come together and just make ONE event.) If we do not matter why come out with an
ARE YOU SURE THIS IS A MISUNDERSTANDING??
Regardless of what it is or in what way you are insulted, I am still very happy to see Singaporean's being united as one once in awhile. So Diner en Blanc, i thank you many many.
And just in case you don't like my post: here is OPPA GANGNAM STYLE!
Mr.Smith, let's #EatABowlOfTauHuay?

How does the explanation they posted not suffice?
1. mention abt food culture which was 1st not allowed by them. Contradicting point.
2. it was clearly not a misunderstanding base on the other two bloggers' account although they both did say it politically correct way that they HOPE it is.How can removing a blogpost and uninviting everyone a misunderstanding?
3.Tau Huay is not a fast food.
4."the statement was in no meant to discourage.." they didnt discourage but they enforce daniel to remove the blog post.
how is the explanation suffice i ask...
1. I'm not aware that they mentioned anything about prohibiting local food dishes in general.
2. Yes, demanding and uninvitation were petty and silly, but I don't see how that relates to their point - which is that they never intended to prohibit local food, only *certain* kinds of food (regardless of cuisine) such as fast food.
3. If tau huay is not fast food, then what is? Fast food is food which can be prepared and served quickly, hence the term. Most of us refer to tau huay affectionately to that dish served ubiquitously in plastic bowls and lids. Of course it may be served in other settings such as restaurants, but that does not turn fries and burgers from being generally considered to be fast food.
4. They said that the statement was not meant to discourage "the bringing of local food", not of discouraging generally, which was the implication of your incomplete quote. Surely and acceptably, they were trying to discourage the bringing of fast food, even if we may agree that their methods were dumb.
Don't get me wrong - I was initially enraged when I heard of how they treated our precious tau huay (I'm living in the UK now and it's what I miss most, heh). However, the more I read about the fiasco, I come to see that it was a PR fiasco handled by some idiots, the ones who demanded the removal of blog posts and the rescinding of invitations.
But Diner en Blanc is meant to be a *formal event* (however dumb, I may agree that to be in an outdoor setting in Singapore), and I don't see how it is unreasonable for the organisers to insist that the food served in such an event be keeping with the theme. Yes, I think their explanation suffices with regards to the source of the matter.
nope nope, I do know where you are coming from and I do agree it's a major PR fail in this incident.
If we are talking about tau huay in purchased container as fast food than most items purchased off shelves are fast food as well? My understanding of fast food is the same as u mentioned. prepared quickly but in this case, tau huay really takes more than a while to be prepared.
somewhere else on their fb, they did mentioned about not bringing local food but it wasn't specifically mentioned about what type of local food.(i know it's really fuzzy). Their fb page is going to blow anytime, the page just goes on and on.
I do agree, it's not at all that they are unreasonable to insist the type of food to be allowed, like i mentioned, it's their event after all.
It's really how they handle it and calling it a misunderstanding is just not acceptable.
Calling local food low class is unacceptable. I understand the look and feel an event wants, the positioning and all but I am sure there is a better way to say it. Just mentioned that the food that they proposed doesn't goes well with the theme. And then give some proper guideline. It's not that tough right?
On top of that, other bloggers were 1st uninvited under the excuse that there weren't enough space (last min.) but not moonberry. She was the only one left on the invited list until she blogged about it under a negative light and then she was uninvited as well. It's not mentioned nor explained in my post but it's within those links that I've link up.
I understand what's the issue and i just hope the organizer and my readers understand as well. I am not siding the rest just because they are my friends.
