Majestic Malayan Tigers. |
'Bai Swee', in the Hokkien dialect, means 'only for show or display purposes'. Which leaves us to think what is real anymore?
The one majestic Malayan tigers are now merely puppets of the human race. As their strength and dominace in the world wane, we can only see their former selves portrayed and kept alive by their human keepers. Here lies a grim reminder that we have to work harder to preserve what nature offers or soon we will only have soulless and empty shells of the Malayan tigers.
The greed and selfish intentions of humans have caused a steep decline in the number of tigers in the wild. Many of these majestic felines have been hunted for their parts to be used in traditional medicine. Tiger parts, like any other animal parts can be replaced by alternative formulas in traditional medicine. So what excuse do people still have to buy tiger parts for their own selfish need?
I might not be Chinese medicine expert and not know how we can replace them with alternative medicine but I like this piece. I like the satire in this about how the once dominating tiger is nothing more than human's puppet. Isn't that just how our world is now? We(the human) has dominated the world and although we have people fighting for the rights of such animals and their "welfare" but can they ever be free and back at their nature habitat like how they were? Are keeping them in cages really what they want? Will a fighter want to die on the battle field or live a peaceful life? So do we rather live a life of what we are suppose to do or just 'bai swee' and tell people what we could have done could be doing and not doing?
Anyway I really like some of SKLO's work and her style. Although I can't say much about how I agree with the way the media has made her "famous" but I still like her work and admire her style. What she has done is definitely not just to bai swee but also to inspire the rest of the people to stand up for their own right and do what they should do and don't bai swee. (I guess, or at least this is how I feel.)
Like Russell Peter says - "Be A MAN! Do the Right THING!"
